STRUDEL, SUGAR AND SCHLAG
A SWEET AND DIGESTIBLE GUIDE TO THE CAKES THAT MAKE VIENNA
what is "Strudel, sugar and schlag"?
Vienna is a city defined by its desserts: decadent tortes and creamy gateaux, flaky strudels and crumbly cookies, pillowy doughnuts and buttery pastries. From Apfelstrudel to Vanillekipferl, each one has a secret or story waiting to be told, tales of empire and migration, splendour and majesty, darkness and decline that, viewed together, tell the history of the Austrian capital. Perhaps more than any other city, the story of Vienna is the story of the dessert counter and that is what this blog, "Strudel, Sugar and Schlag," sets out to tell.
and who writes it?
I'm Liam Hoare and when I'm not at the Kaffeehaus -- or perhaps even when I am -- I work as a Vienna-based journalist covering the politics, culture and Jewish life of Austria and the wider region. Currently the Europe Editor for Moment, I also contribute to the Forward, Jewish Chronicle, Tablet, and many more.
I graduated with an MA in History from University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies in 2011.
